After the
service, we became part of the funeral procession to the cemetery. The surprise
of the day was the outpouring of support within the community, as the streets
were lined with men and women of all ages with flags raised paying tribute to
James. It was incredibly touching and only those who were part of it would
understand the emotions it evoked. The cemetery service included beautiful
playing of the bagpipes and taps, a 21-gun salute, folding of the flags which
were presented to James’s mothers and wife, and a “hooyah” to James and his
deep sea division. It was a moment that will live with us forever.

Day 20 March 6
Neither David
nor I have been to a military funeral before, but it was just as you would see
on TV or movies. Due to different traditions of the many branches of the
military, they had small unique aspects to their division, but overall the service
was the same. Within the service, the men lined either side of the walls and by
two’s, they met in the middle at James’s casket, removed a pin, and set it with
him. It was incredibly touching to see these men that serve our nation show
such genuine and sincere emotion to their fallen comrade and his family. The
service was one of hope when the pastor shared James’s acceptance of Christ as
his Savior when he was in youth group and how his life after that was an
example of that commitment. He became the rock of his family and stronghold in
his marriage. The pastor spoke of hope that while he may not live here on this
earth, he is living eternally with God where one day we may all meet up with
him.
We returned home and
relaxed for the rest of the evening, refueling for the work we’ll start
tomorrow.
